The Member of Parliament for Damongo constituency, Hon. Lawyer Abu Jinapor has commissioned a newly constructed astro turf to enhance football and other sporting activities in Damongo in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.
The ceremony to commission the football facility occurred on Saturday, June 18, 2022, and witnessed by thousands of people from across the constituency.
In an address to officially unveil the facility, the legislature said he was very happy and felt a great sense of accomplishment for what he has been able to do enhance sports especially football.
According to him, he was unhappy about the then muddy and unhygienic nature of the field which served as the town park of the Damongo township on which football men and women played.
The facility, he said, was a strategic development plan tailored at ensuring that sporting (football) talents of the youth are harnessed and as well given the opportunity to enhance their chances of playing at the highest level.
He disclosed that he will in the coming days commission another completed astro turf pitch at Laribanga also in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.
He appealed to the management of the facility to allow people irrespective of their political affiliation to use the field for its intended purpose to promote social and holistic development.
He also advised them to inculcate the habit of cultural maintenance to ensure its longevity.
A four team football gala was organized to commemorate the commissioning of the sports facility.
Division 2 league side, Mole Nationals who emerged victors after beating Ndewura Jakpa Savannah FC on penalties after a one all draw on the commissioning day, were awarded a trophy, football and an amount of Gh¢2,000.
Ndewura Jakpa Savannah FC who came second, went home with a football and an amount of Gh¢1,000 with the other two participating teams receiving Gh¢1,000 each.
Also present at the commissioning were the regional chairman of the NPP for Savannah Region, Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana Kalamonia, MCE for West Gonja, Musah Karim Kusubari, DCE for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, Hajia Barchisu Losina Watara, Damongo constituency chairman, Alhaji Adam Braimah amongst others.
