Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril on the occasion of Government’s afforestation drive dubbed “Green Ghana Day ” observed nation-wide tree planting exercise yesterday, Friday June 10, 2022. The minister led various departments and agencies which include the police, the military, first and second cycle institutions Gonjaland Youth Association etc. to plant over a thousand trees aimed at restoring the country’s vegetation cover.
The tree planting exercise commenced at the Jakpa Palace where the King of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Sulemana Tutumba Boresa I blessed the principal activity of the day by being the first to plant a tree at the palace to pave way for the Savannah Regional edition.
Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibril also planted a tree at the Jakpa Palace before extending the nation-wide tree planting exercise to other significant areas in the region’s capital.
Addressing journalists ahead of the exercise, Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibril commended Government for introducing the Green Ghana Day and encouraged the general public to actively participate in ensuring the main goal for which the initiative was conceived is collectively achieved.
According to him, climate change has negatively impacted the Savannah Region adding that all efforts aimed at having a sustainable vegetation have been derailed as a result of the adverse degradation and depletion of the region’s forest cover.
He underscored the importance of the trees on the environment and its inhabitants and urged everyone to at least plant a tree and nurture it to protect and preserve the country’s forest reserves and the entire environment.
The Hon. Regional minister couldn’t gloss over his excitement for the massive turnout by the good people of Savannah region. According to him, it’s a clear indication that we will commit to ensuring that all the seedlings greatly survive.
The regional Dir. Of the forestry commission Mr. Isaac Sintim and his team where on the ground assisting with the technicalities which at the end of the day added some beauty to the entire exercise.
Hon. Saeed finally assured the Forestry Commission of his support to ensure the region attains 100% survival rate of all the trees that have been planted.
The Regional Coordinating Dir. Mr Yaw Adu Asamoah, The West Gonja Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Muasah Kusubari, The park Manager of Mole Mr. Ali Mahama and several others actively participated in the tree planting exercise.
