On Monday 17th August, 2020, the Ghana Association of Elected Assembly Members (GAAM), inaugurated it’s Savannah Regional Executives in Damongo, the regional capital at the RCC conference hall.
At a press briefing, the Savannah regional Public Relations Officer ( PRO) for the association and Assembly member for Nabori electoral area in the West Gonja Municipal assembly of the Savannah region, Hon. Iddrisu Abdul-Rahman, explained that the association came into existence immediately after the 17th December 2019 district level and unit committee elections that was held across Ghana.
The sole aim of forming the association is to champion the cause and welfare of all elected assembly members in Ghana.
The association is also seeking for the necessary constitutional amendments to promote the welfare of all assembly members in the country.
He disclosed that Hon. Charles Adu Assinor, the National President of the association, brought forth the idea of forming the association and expressed gratitude to him for the brilliant idea.
He stated that GAAM is non-partisan and therefore, does not represent the interest of any political party in Ghana.
To make GAAM a valid institution, Hon Rahman said the association is well registered with the Registrar General’s Department of Ghana and possesses all valid documents required by law to operate.
The GAAM is on course to include all assembly members and that the association has a membership of almost 80% of all elected assembly members in the country. The association is determined to cover the over 5,000 elected members across Ghana.
GAAM and it’s members are the pivot of participatory democracy at the grassroot level, it is the lower arm of government which interacts with the electorates and other elected members on daily basis.
The role of the assembly member is as crucial as the parliamentarian and GAAM believes that chiefs, religious leaders, political parties, NGOs, CSOs and all stakeholders must support the association to make decentralization a reality and improve the welfare of assembly members in the country.
Mr. Saeed Jibreel Muhazu, the Hon Municipal Chief Executive Officer for West Gonja, and a former assembly member for Damongo (Zongo/Langbonto electoral area) for a decade, lauded the idea and encouraged members to remain focus and not be influenced by politics. The association will be beneficial to all future assembly members and this will help improve their welfare.
