The Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government recently visited Damongo, the capital of the Savannah region, to assess the progress of construction on the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council administration block and identify any related challenges. Hon. Suleman Adamu Sanid, Vice Chairperson for the committee and MP for Ahafo Ano North Constituency in the Ashanti region, led the team and commended Dagbene Borns construction firm for their work on the project despite facing challenges.
Hon. Sanid urged the contractor to complete the project within the extended three-month period and deliver the structure to the government. The three-storey building was awarded on October 14th, 2019, with site possession taking place on November 11th of the same year. The original deadline for completion was November 2020, but due to unforeseen difficulties such as land litigation and unavailability of quarry materials, the contractor has been granted a three-month extension. The total cost of the contract is GHC 17,410,545.83.
Hon. Ibrahim Ahmed, MP for Banda Constituency in the Bono region, appealed to Ghanaian contractors to take ownership of the projects awarded to them and expedite action to gain the trust of the government in order to secure more construction jobs. He disclosed that when the government wanted to build six new regional administrative structures for the newly created regions, five were awarded to local contractors and one to a Chinese construction firm. While the Chinese firm has finished its job and is being supervised by a local consultant, the local contractors are yet to complete their work due to reasons such as land litigation issues and unavailability of quarry materials.
Hon. Ahmed encouraged local contractors to leave a good legacy for future construction jobs from the government and to deny themselves of self-comfort and endure hardships in certain instances to finish on time. He cited the example of Chinese contractors who prioritize job completion and motivate workers to do the same, even if it means sacrificing personal time for social events.
